Tennessee Titans’ New Look Defense: 7 New Starters!
The Tennessee Titans' defense will look a lot different next year with new defensive coordinator, Dennard Wilson. With seven new starters and no Mike Vrabel in sight, it’s hard to know what to expect.
Watching this defense next year will be like watching someone who has been in a coma for 10 years wake up and go to Broadway only to find 1,000 new bars. It’s a different world.
Let's dive into the defense and talk about 5 of my favorite additions: Sebastian Joseph-Day, L'Jarius Sneed, and Chidobe Awuzie
Sebastian Joseph-Day: A Perfect Fit
Sebastian Joseph-Day brings experience from his time with the Rams and Chargers. Winning a Super Bowl alongside Aaron Donald, Joseph-Day developed into a great defensive role player. Now with the Titans, he will get to line up next to Jeffrey Simmons, which is a match made in heaven. Or maybe hell, if you’re an AFC South quarterback. Simmons will benefit from Joseph-Day’s presence, creating a duo that will make even Trevor Lawerence shit his pants.
L'Jarius Sneed: Championship Pedigree
L'Jarius Sneed’s arrival in Tennessee is maybe the highlight of the offseason. With two Super Bowl rings and one of the best playoff performances by a defensive back in 2024, Sneed’s championship pedigree will have an immediate impact. Sneed’s versatility allows him to excel in both man and zone coverage. Sneed is truly one of the few lockdown corners remaining in this new era of football.
Chidobe Awuzie: Familiar Face
Chidobe Awuzie, formerly with the Bengals, brings familiarity to the Titans’ secondary. In Wilson’s new hyper-aggressive defensive style, Awuzie will have an immediate impact. Awuzie’s presence alongside Sneed and Amani Hooker will create a very talented and athletic secondary. The AFC South is suddenly becoming an offensive division, so having a strong secondary is critical.
T'Vondre Sweat: Rookie Sensation
T'Vondre Sweat, the Titans’ second-round draft pick, has already turned heads with his exceptional skills at the inside lineman position. I’m really excited to watch how he fits into the rotation because he could be a day 1 starter who plays 80% of the snaps.
Jeffrey Simmons
Enough said. With Aaron Donald’s retirement, he’s the best IDL in the NFL.
Last Thoughts
The Titans have had some awesome defensive units over the years, and they were always a tough matchup with Vrabel at the helm. While I’m excited about this unit's potential, I think Titans fans are going to have to get used to winning some games in the 30s. It seems terrifying, but it also feels like we’re catching up with the rest of the NFL.
